Mac Jones is without a doubt not the problem for the Patriots. Mac Jones is good. He is a very solid quarterback, there is just very little help around him. This Patriots team has had a chance to win in their first two games of the season. And both of those games were against teams who are on the very short list to win the Super Bowl. Mac Jones is good, not the problem.
I honestly don’t know why I am so defensive when it comes to Mac Jones. I’m not even a Patriots fan. I don’t have a team that I pull for 100% of the time in the NFL. I am very impartial to Alabama players, especially quarterbacks. But I don’t get this worked up over Jalen Hurts, Tua, or even Bryce Young. I think it has something to do with the first two guys being widely considered to be good, and even most people will agree that Young looks like he will have a good career. But there are a lot of people who think Mac Jones should not be a starting quarterback in the NFL. And that really bothers me. It might even have something to do with the fact that he reminds me a little of AJ Macarron, who I still believe would have been a good NFL starter if he had ever gotten a shot. I mean, he won a playoff game for the Bengals before Vontaze Burfict decided to quite literally knock Antonio Brown stupid. Whatever this is about Mac and I don’t want to go down the Macaarron rabbit hole. Actually I do and I will probably write that this week. But let’s look at Mac Jones as an NFL quarterback.
Rookie Year
Mac Jones threw for 3,800 yards in his rookie year. That’s more than Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Russell Wilson, Ryan Tannehill, Derek Carr, Dak Prescott, and Trevor Lawrence. Just to name a few. Outside the awful Cam Newton year, Jones was the replacement for the greatest football player of all time. No pressure or anything. All he did was take the Pats to the playoffs and make the pro bowl. He wasn’t a world beater but he was solid. He stepped in with unreasonable expectations and performed well.
Year 2
Year two was a complete waste. Not only did he get injured early on in the year. He had the entire fan base rooting for his backup to take over. Oh yeah did I mention that defensive minded and failed head coach Matt Patricia was calling the plays for his offense. I’m not one to doubt the greatest coach of all time, but what the actual fuck was he thinking. How could anyone succeed with that shit for brains calling the plays. With all that controversy he still threw for almost 3,000 yards in just 14 games. That’s basically a miracle. You could say Mac Jones is good just based on that alone.
Present Day
So far this season the Patriots are 0-2. But like I mentioned earlier that is against two of the best teams in the league regardless of who you ask. He has thrown two not so great interceptions. But in is defense the pick from week one was during a monsoon, and if we are getting picky the ball did touch his receiver’s hands. If you touch it you can catch it. Either way he led a big comeback in both games and his team had a chance to tie or win the game in both contests this year. He out played Jalen Hurts in week one, and had a comparable stat line to Tua in week two. The only difference in week two? Tua benefited from 145 yards in the rushing game. Mac got 88, and 25 of those he got himself. He was sacked 4 times in week 2, and that could easily have been higher if he hadn’t used his cat-like reflexes to get out of there. His defense provided him a whopping sack total of 1. Not to mention his playmakers let him down again this week with a fumble on a promising drive early on in the game.
And while we are talking about playmakers, lets look at who Mac has. Devante Parker, Hunter Henry, Mike Gesicki, Kendrick Bourne, and Juju Smith-Schuster. That sounds like a fantasy roster that your idiot 10 year old nephew would draft in the first year he’s old enough to play. I mean really who could do anything with that. You have to be a real NFL die hard to even know who most of those guys are. And still the Patriots were in both of their games so far this year.
Not The Problem
If you think Mac Jones is the problem you are an idiot. He has more yards per game than Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Justin Herbert through two games. He has the same amount, or more, touchdown passes than those guys plus, Lawerence, Goff, Jones, Jackson, Purdy, and Tua, just to name a few. Mac Jones has an average defense, a high school caliber offensive line, and a non-existent run game. What do you want him to do? He is literally the only bright spot on this Patriots team and people don’t see it because they need someone to blame. Mac Jones doesn’t suck, you suck. Mac Jones is good. The Patriots have a lot to look forward to this year mainly because of Mac. I wrote about it here in my winners of the losers article, which I will be writing again for week 2 so be on the look out. If you think Mac Jones is the problem, I hate you. But I love to argue, so let me know about it in the comments or tell me on twitter. Maybe you are a super genius and you have the answers for this Patriots team, tell me that too. I still believe Mac Jones is good and I think the Patriots will win at least 10 games. And then everyone will see, definitively, that Mac Jones is good and not the problem. I’ll tell you what, maybe that stupid lighthouse is the problem. The Patriots haven’t won a game since they started trying to make that a thing. Something to think about. If they lose to the jets next week I think the lighthouse has to go. When I think Lighthouse I think Canada for some reason. Not very Patriot if you ask me.
