I just got done watching the Vikings and Eagles play on Thursday night football. I went 3-1-1 no big deal. Also my parlay missed by 4 yards, that was actually a big deal and it made me very sad. But it was close. I wrote about it here, and there will be more to come. Maybe keep that in mind. But we aren’t here for that right now, we are here for a dumb sports idea that might be great.
In this game the one push I had was on Vikings +6. They actually had an outside chance to cover that and win the game. But it got me thinking about a thought I’ve always had that could change the game. My dumb sports idea that might be great for everybody. The one idea that could make sports even better. That could instantly turn big losses into wins.
So it really wouldn’t have applied for this game. Like I said the Vikings had an actual legitimate chance to win at the end on a hail mary type play. Now if you saw the game, it really wasn’t that legitimate of a chance. But if they had scored by the scoring rules of football they would have won. Now, I just want you to think about how exciting it is when a team is down 6 and they are in range for a shot at the endzone. Or a basketball team is down 3 with just enough time on the clock for one last shot. It’s like sitting at a roulette table waiting to see what number hits. Why should only the close games have that effect?
The Dumb Idea
My dumb idea is this, every team should have a chance to win on the last play of the game. No matter the score. In fact, the further behind you are the more convoluted the scenario should be. A football team has the ball down 10 with 1 second left, there is no mathematical way they can win right? Not in my system. If you are in that scenario you now have to score the ball on one end of the field and then score on the other end of the field. In the same play. Down 17? Now you have to score three times in one play. Down 42? Now you have to score like 6 times or something.
A basketball team is down 20 with five seconds left. It’s over right? Wrong. You now have to go into the 10th row on your own end of the court and make a shot from there. Down 30? Now you’re shooting from the rafters. Soccer team down 3 with 15 seconds left? Not after you kick the ball the entire length of the pitch and score while the other team is allowed 5 goalies in the net.
I don’t have all the kinks worked out. I’m just spit balling here. But I’m trying to create a system where the game literally is not over until the clock hits 00:00. And who is it going to hurt? It would never actually happen. No one could ever pull that off. Until they do. And just thinking about how amazing that would be. We’d probably only see one of these plays work once like every 20 years. But there would always be a chance. That’s all I’m asking for. A chance of excitement all the way to the end no matter how shitty the game is.
Get Behind The Movement
Do you think this rule would work or do you think I’m crazy. I’m fine with either one honestly. But if you are on my side get up with me and let’s workshop this thing. We could start a movement. Maybe if enough of us like it then it’s not such a dumb sports idea. Maybe you’ve got a dumb sports idea that might be great. Tell me about it. The dumber the better. I will most likely be 100% behind it with little to no convincing. Follow me on Twitter here and let’s figure this thing out!
